ERPO Support Model

At the end of 2024, 97Percent and Citizen Data conducted a survey of 5,100 voters who own guns to determine their support for various gun safety policies. Using the data on Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), commonly known as red flag laws, we scaled up our findings to create a nationwide picture of similar gun-owning registered voters. Using machine learning to analyze and compare hundreds of voter traits from participants in the gun-owner survey to the general voting population, we assigned a score from 0 to 100, where 100 indicates the highest likelihood that the individual voter is a gun owner who supports the implementation of ERPO laws.

This map below is a visual representation of ERPO support among gun-owning voters by county in the U.S.

Using and Interpreting the Map

  • Dark green indicates highest support and dark red indicates lowest support.

  • The numbers for specific counties can be found as you hover your mouse over them; clicking on a county will allow you to keep that county’s numbers open and clicking that same county again will close them.

  • Each county is tagged with the following information: the proportion of ERPO support among the gun-owning voters in the county as well as the specific number breakdown that results in this percentage (# of gun-owning voters in the county that are modeled to support ERPO / # of gun-owning voters in the county).
