Dr. Pierre Atlas Joins 97Percent Board

June 6, 2024: 97Percent is pleased to announce that Dr. Pierre Atlas has joined the organization as its newest board member. Dr. Atlas is a Senior Lecturer in the Public Affairs and Criminal Justice programs at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University-Indianapolis.

Dr. Atlas has devoted much of his career to researching and writing about violent conflicts and conflict resolution. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses, including a course on gun culture and policy. He also writes a monthly opinion column for the Indianapolis Business Journal. A U.S. Army veteran, Atlas is a gun owner and NRA life member since 1997.

“I have long believed that one thing most Americans—gun owners and non-gun owners alike—can agree on is the need to reduce America’s horrific, and globally unique, number of gun deaths and nonfatal shootings each year,” Dr. Atlas says. “What attracted me to 97Percent was its practical and pragmatic approach, devoid of the ideological positioning and grandstanding that I see in many gun reform and gun rights groups today.”

“Pierre is a perfect addition to the 97Percent team. Through his deep study of gun policy, he knows which measures are truly effective in saving lives. And he understands and respects the gun-owning community because he belongs to it himself,” said Executive Director Olivia Troye. “We are thrilled to have Pierre’s partnership and guidance as we work to reverse the trajectory of gun violence in the United States.”
