Supreme Court ruling in U.S. v. Zackey Rahimi

97Percent commends the U.S. Supreme Court for reversing the Fifth Circuit’s decision in U.S. v. Zackey Rahimi today, upholding the constitutionality of laws that prevent abusers subject to a domestic violence protection order (DVPO) from possessing firearms.

This ruling guarantees that critical protections for victims of domestic violence will remain in place, significantly decreasing their risk of serious injury or death, as we asserted in our amicus brief to the Court last year.

97Percent champions the views of gun owners on common-sense, research-backed measures that demonstrate efficacy in reducing gun deaths. Restricting access to firearms for those with a history of abuse who have been found by a court to pose a credible threat to another's safety is one such measure, and it is widely supported by Americans, including gun owners.

“Today’s decision will help ensure the safety and well-being of countless individuals and communities,” said 97Percent Executive Director Olivia Troye. “It also bolsters our commitment to continue advocating for policies that protect victims and prevent gun violence, while respecting Americans’ Second Amendment rights.”
